Young, Black and Proud Scholarships

The Young, Black & Proud Scholarship (YBPS) program supports and celebrates the talents and strengths of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and helps them to reach their full potential.

We are so proud to support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (ATSICHS) to deliver this excellent initiative that supports young people in their success.

2024 winners announced!

In partnership with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (ATSICHS) Brisbane, we have announced the winners for the Young, Black and Proud Scholarship for 2024! 

Scholarships of $1000, $2000 and $5000 were awarded across the areas of education and training, the arts, and sports.

Zhané

2024 winner

Zhané has just finished a architecture degree and is passionate about sports - especially boxing and building her art business. Nature helps Zhané feel closer to culture.

Amelia

2024 winner

Ameila loves math and science, and is passionate about music, art, writing, storytelling and learning new languages. She loves playing her violin, doing some art and singing daily. Ameila’s parents inspire her to be organised and hard working. Her passion for learning and connecting her art to culture is awesome. She goes bushwalking with her family in nature, providing inspiration and resources to create art to connect her to cultural through nature is inspiring.

Jacelle

2024 winner

A young person who feels connected to her culture through art and family, also loves spending time with her mum at the park. Jacelle loves her Karate training, she aspires to succeed and puts in the hard work to stay fit and focused, recently Jacelle achieved her blue belt. Jacelle has made lots of new friends and becoming more confident and competes in competitions. Her goal is to become a black belt and travel to international competitions and win gold.

Aunty Roma

Sports, culture and leadership academy (SCALA)

2024 winner

Aunty Roma applied on behalf of the group of young First Nations people at SCALA. At SCALA, Aunty Roma coaches netball, puts together yarning circles, arts, crafts and cultural education. She has a passion for coaching netball and developing young indigenous people leadership skills and confidence.

Gold Coast, 2023 winner

A young Kundadidji artist who feels connected to her culture when at the ocean with friends, and winning the scholarship has really helped her art journey

Kane Munt

Torres Strait Islands/Redcliffe 2023 winner

A Mabuiag man from the Torres Strait Islands who has used the scholarship funding to learn canoeing and is now competing in the IVF canoe world sprint competition.

Kaziw Meta

Torres Strait Islands 2023 winner

A boarding house on Thursday Island. The children and young people of Kaziw Meta were able to travel from Thursday Island throughout Australia to showcase this longstanding and rich culture through dance and song..
