Our history
The QFCC was established in 2014 in response to a recommendation of the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry, also known as the Carmody Inquiry.
We function under the Family and Child Commission Act 2014, which requires us to:
- promote the safety, wellbeing and best interest of children and young people
- promote and advocate the responsibilities of families and communities to protect and care for children and young people
- improve the child protection system.
Since our inception, we have led a number of reviews that have influenced improvements in the systems designed to keep Queensland children safe, and we have amplified the views and perspectives of children and young people through many of our projects.
Child protection reform journey
The journey began after the review of the Queensland child protection system in 2012. The review delivered recommendations to build a better child and family support system and charted a 10 year roadmap to deliver these improvements.
2012
The Queensland Child Protection Commission (the Commission) of Inquiry was set up to review the Queensland child protection system and chart a 10 year roadmap to better the system.
2013
The final report, Taking Responsibility: A Roadmap for Queensland Child Protection, was given to the Queensland Government to consider the Commission’s 121 recommendations. The government accepted 115 recommendations and gave in-principle support to 6.
2014
Queensland Government started working on the recommendations.
