A life they could’ve only imagined
QFCC Engagement Support Officer Tyla reflects on her experience being the child of a migrant.
I watched their trials and tears, as they ventured across the seas to give me a life they could’ve only ever dreamed. Under the stars in this foreign land, toes sinking into the sand until my feet were submerged, allowing the realisation of their sacrifice to flow over me and fill my heart with gratitude and purpose.
In this new world, I will do them proud but more than that I will do myself proud and carry on the legacy and values they instilled in me when they made sacrifices I could never truly comprehend.
Their sweat and sleepless nights, tireless work ethic that many immigrant children know all too well has given me more than a place to call home, it has given me a chance. A chance to create a future for myself that I know they didn’t have the opportunity to.
Though I carry memories of the past and heartache creeps in, a sense of belonging and gratitude defeats it quickly.
In this foreign land, together we are bound, a fusion of diversity - a great treasure.
