In collaboration with our partnering agencies, we:
- share information and findings from our reviews
- coordinate oversight efforts
- discuss reform initiatives.
We also chair the:
- QFCC Reviews: Strategic Oversight Group: This group monitors the implementation of government-accepted recommendations arising from reviews in which we are the delegated oversight agency.
- Strategic Cross-Agency Oversight Group: This group discusses sector-wide trends and issues with a focus on external, systemic and cross-agency oversight.
Each year we provide a report to the Premier about Queensland’s performance in:
- achieving state and national goals relating to the child protection system, comparisons to other jurisdictions
- reducing the number of, and improving the outcomes for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in the child protection system.
From time to time the Premier has requested we lead comprehensive systemic reviews, such as When a child is missing from out-of-care home.
Reporting on the performance of the child protection system
We are required to report annually on the performance of the Queensland child protection system (refer to Section 40 of the Family and Child Commission Act 2014), including:
- progress towards achieving state and national goals
- progress over time in comparison to other jurisdictions
- progress in reducing the number of, and improving the outcomes for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in the child protection system.

Oversight
The QFCC monitors Queensland’s child safety and youth justice systems.
Our 2023–2027 Oversight Framework and 2023–24 Oversight Forward Workplan detail how we perform our oversight function with transparency and objectivity.
The framework articulates the model, principles and methodologies we apply to our systemic oversight work. The framework provides an explanation of how our approach produces objective analysis to identify changes to laws, policies, programs and services that can improve outcomes for Queensland children and their families, as required under our legislation, the Family and Child Commission Act 2014. The framework makes a strong commitment to involving the community, sector and government in assisting us to design, undertake and promote our oversight work. We recognise that achieving positive change relies on the input, attention and action of our stakeholders.
Our forward workplan outlines the areas of concern we intend to monitor and review in the coming years. We will report every six months on the progress of our workplan and will seek input and guidance from stakeholders on emerging issues that may reshape our priorities. We will update and publish our workplan every 12 months.
