- Intervention with Parental Agreement
We have completed a review of a child protection response used in Queensland known as an Intervention with Parental Agreement.
Child Safety can use this response when it is satisfied parents are able and willing to work with them to meet their child’s safety and care needs, without the need for a court order. It allows a child to remain connected to their family and culture at home with their parents, while action is taken to safeguard the child, and it prevents them from entering the out-of-home care system.
We reviewed the use of these agreements to better understand their strengths and the areas for improvement. The review involved speaking to more than 190 stakeholders including parents, Child Safety staff, and staff from community and family organisations, who shared their experiences and insights. The common view was that the agreements are an important child protection response, but changes in processes, practices, support services, programs, resourcing and training could improve their effectiveness.
Our report Keeping children in focus captures these valuable insights.
